We're diving in an area called Muri Muri, just north of Bora Bora, and almost as soon as we get in the water, our dive master, Benoit Gratas, introduces us to a hawksbill sea turtle -- like Crush, a character in Pixar's "Finding Nemo" -- and shows us how to feed him a piece of sea sponge by hand 70 feet under water.
He's so big -- more than two feet in diameter -- and all around us are yellow and silver, black and gold, striped and dotted puffer fish, barracuda, triggerfish, black tip reef sharks and even a lemon shark. I expect Nemo to come swimming by any minute.

Relationships; Do You Know What You Want?

Something happened yesterday which reminded me of how easy it is for us to get our priorities the wrong way round. I noticed an order made on my website for a golf mind training hypnosis download. Then I saw that this same person came back six hours later and ordered two more hypnosis downloads - one entitled "re-generate love in your relationship" and the other titled "getting over a broken relationship".

Two thoughts immediately sprang to mind. The first was that this person put his golf before his relationship. (Now, I'm holding my hands up here to admit that this is an assumption of mine and based on very tenuous information, but it triggered in me the observation that many people do put their hobby first in their life and their relationship last...and still more put their work first and relationship last.) The second was that he was betting on both sides with his later order; his choice of hypnosis downloads indicated that he did not know which way to turn - get over his relationship or try again with his relationship.
It may seem to many that purchasing both downloads was sensible, that he could deal with his situation no matter the eventuality. To me though, I saw a red flag waving in my mind; this person has no clear intent, he has made no clear decision, and if his thoughts are going this way and then that, so too will his behavior. He will be acting first hot and then cold, for want of a better expression. And his partner will wonder what on earth is going on. BOTH parties end up confused…and frustrated, which does not bode well for the relationship. The expression "being in two minds" can be clearly seen.

It is easy for an outsider to proffer advice. The person in question needs to take a step back, and see things from every angle and then to make a choice. The good news is that he has chosen hypnosis. This is great; In fact, it is the best thing he could have done. Hypnosis is a state of relaxation, and so he will be able to change state, he will be able to step back from his emotions and then he will be able to think clearly. To be able to do this is massively important. (His hypnosis download choice indicated that he could not think clearly, he could not think straight.)

Now, what I'm hoping is that he will firstly choose to play "regenerate love in your relationship". Why so? Because if you're in two minds about a relationship, it's worth a try. Why throw something away which could still work? Why not give it 150% and then you know, either way, that you have given it your best shot? If it works, that's fantastic; you're happy. If it doesn't work then you know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that this relationship was not for you. Either way, you win. If you didn't give it this chance, you would always wonder "what if...?" and that is not a good feeling to have niggling away at the back of your mind. And, if it doesn't work it is easy to move on, seeing as you now know it could never work. Win, win!
There is one proviso; if you are going to focus on regenerating love in your relationship, focus properly, and give it 150%. Your determination and your commitment WILL be reflected in the results. If you give it a "half-hearted" attempt, the result will be just that. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as my mother would say. You create your own reality through your own beliefs, expectations and commitment.

Hypnosis is a great way in which you can get your conscious and subconscious minds working together, to gain clear focus and alignment within your mind. You can get your logical and your emotional minds working together also. Have you ever felt drained after being around a certain person? Maybe you feel like you're walking on eggshells trying to cater to their ever-changing mood. Or for the most part, you have to go out of your way to explain your actions to them so they can understand your good intentions. Maybe they say they understand how you feel, but yet, their actions are contradicting. Whether or not their behavior is deliberate, bottom line is: you feel drained when you have to deal with them. Could it be that this relationship requires more care and maintenance than you're prepared to give?
People with whom you surround yourself can make you, or break you. You may have been led to believe that the longer the friendship, the better the friend. Yet, that's not always the case. Yes, some friendships can be like fine wine—growing in richness with time—but some, just aren't meant to have a very long shelf life.

Recognize that regardless of how long you've been together, if it's an unhealthy relationship, it can be a kind of toxic in your life; it can be a roadblock in your life preventing you from moving ahead to where you want to go. And if you allow it to continue, your mood will suffer in a way that not only sacrifices your own well-being, but also the well-being of others around you.

It can be hard to part ways with a friend or a partner, even when their behavior warrants it. While betrayal or seemingly deliberate attempts to be hurtful are clear signals that it's time to move on, sometimes the signal of the end of a relationship isn't that obvious. Furthermore, sometimes an unhealthy relationship can brew from two people who truly want to be kind to one another, but somehow along the way, they ended up on different pages; they don't agree with each other, and tension rises. This can be just as unhealthy. So what do you do? I guess this is where you have to use your better judgement.

If after a fair amount of consideration, you feel strongly about maintaining a relationship with this person, then be assertive and communicate honestly with them about what is working and not working for you in the relationship. Give it your all and kindly speak your truth, and allow them to do the same. And after this, if you still don't see any progress, at least you know you did your best and you wouldn't have left much room for regrets with "I should have" or "I could have."

Leaving behind an unhealthy relationship is one of the best things you can do for your well-being, as you make room for more positive, nurturing people to enter your life. As they say: When one door closes, only then can another door open.

In life, we'll all inevitably experience unhealthy relationships that challenge our minds and hearts so we can learn and grow. So learn from it, grow from it. But recognize when it is time to say goodbye. As you move forward in life, continue to give that which you seek. If you want relationships that enhance your life, help you to be your best, and encourage your dreams, then, offer this kind of friendship to another person. The sun keeps shining in the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean, but since the economic downturn, a dark cloud has been looming over them. Tighter wallets mean fewer tourists. According to the latest statistics from the Caribbean Tourism Organization, visits to many island destinations declined last year. For example, between January and October, the Bahamas experienced a 3 percent drop; Martinique was off by 4.4 percent between January and August. In December, when many Americans were grieving over their stock portfolios, tourism in Puerto Rico fell almost 13 percent, nearly twice as much as in the Cayman Islands. Adding to the malaise: Resorts are laying off workers and even closing hotel wings and limiting restaurant hours.

"Overall to the region, tourism is down," said Richard Kahn, marketing consultant for the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association. "The Caribbean is going to have a softer season than last winter, but it won't be as devastating as expected. People still want to go to the Caribbean."

To lure reluctant vacationers, the islands are offering tempting discounts on a range of items, from fish fries to oceanfront rooms. Here is a sampling of deals for six destinations that could chase away those doomy clouds.

'World's Best Job' Web site flooded in final hours

BRISBANE, Australia – A lucky 200 people have been shortlisted for the chance to become the caretaker of a tropical Australian island, dubbed by promoters as the "Best Job in the World."

But tourism officials acknowledged Friday that many last-minute applications were lost because the Web site was flooded with traffic.

Nearly 35,000 people submitted video applications for the job with Tourism Queensland, which pays a salary of 150,000 Australian dollars ($97,000) to relax on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef for six months while writing a blog to promote the island.

The job is part of a AU$1.7 million campaign to publicize the charms of northeastern Queensland state.

Anthony Hayes, Tourism Queensland's chief executive, said a wave of 7,500 applications hit the Web site in the 72 hours before Monday's deadline.

"This massive amount of traffic understandably slowed the site down and regretfully some people weren't able to get their video application in on time," he said. "It has been frankly heartbreaking because people have gone to so much trouble, and we have lost some fantastic applications. But to be fair to everyone, we have to be consistent."

The tourism board will announce 50 finalists Tuesday on its Web site. The public will then have until March 24 to vote for their favorite applicant.

The top vote-getter and 10 other people chosen by the tourism board will be flown to Hamilton Island for interviews. The winner will be announced May 6, and the job begins July 1.

Grand Canyon marks 90th anniversary as national park

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — The Grand Canyon is celebrating its 90th year as a national park.

Congress established the canyon as the country's 17th national park on Feb. 26, 1919.

Some 5 million people visit the Grand Canyon each year, known for its colorful landscape and immense size. In 1919, around 44,000 people visited the park.

Park Superintendent Steve Martin says the main draw for people around the world remains the remarkable landscape that touches people's souls in a way that few other places do.

Martin is expected to speak at a brief ceremony Thursday commemorating the anniversary and the opening of Verkamp's Visitor Center, which explains what it's like to live at the Grand Canyon and the history of the family that operated a gift shop out of the building for more than a century.

Rio's Carnival lets 40-somethings star in samba

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Brazil's Carnival, long a symbol of youth, beauty and sex, added a mature twist Monday by giving two women in their 40s a chance to dance nearly nude at the head of their samba parades.

Some of Brazil's most beautiful women battle it out each year to become their school's "drum queen" and lead their parades by furiously dancing samba in little more than glittery body paint, an enormous headdress and dangerously tall high heels.

The role usually goes to young starlets or beautiful women plucked from the downtrodden areas where the samba schools are based.

But two leading samba schools taking part in Monday's final night of the top-tier parades surprised Brazilians by choosing women aged 46 and 44 - though one is a former model and the other was once a Playboy cover girl.

"It's a huge change," Luiza Brunet, 46, told The Associated Press as she prepared for her showcase role in the Imperatiz samba school's parade. "It shows that women who are more mature are gaining space in a country with so much machismo, where we give more value to youth and beauty."

Psychologist Enaile Ortiz - herself 48 - agreed.

"Brazil has always had this understanding that youth equals beauty, but this year's Carnival is breaking that paradigm," Ortiz said as she strolled down Ipanema beach. "This shows you can be in a beautiful state, no matter what stage of life you are in."

While having two drum queens in their 40s is unusual, it's not the first time a woman of a certain age has held the honor. Brazilian actress Susana Vieira last appeared as a Carnival drum queen in 2006 at the age of 63.

And no one has suggested that Brunet or Luma de Oliveira, 44 - both mothers with two children - are unfit for the gaze of millions, or likely to wilt during 80 minutes of dancing in Rio's unrelenting heat.

Hicla Curvello, a 26-year-old student sunning herself on Ipanema beach, seemed shocked that anybody would ask the question.

"They have incredible bodies - haven't you seen them?" she said. "They gorgeously represent the face of Rio's Carnival and it isn't important if that face is a little older this year."

Imperatiz and Oliveira's Portela entry are among the 12 top samba schools competing over two nights in front of 80,000 spectators at the Sambadrome stadium. A winner is announced on Wednesday.

No prizes are given, but the winners are celebrated across Brazil and the drum queens, if they aren't already famous, often land modeling and acting roles.

The reigning champion, Beija-Flor, paraded early Monday with an elaborate, if rather difficult to comprehend, presentation on the history of mankind's relationship with water and bathing. The school used 7,000 liters of water on its floats, in the form of waterfalls, fountains and a pyramid that mid-parade was transformed into a beach.

Beija-Flor had it's top fan in attendance: President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva spent eight hours watching the parades - staying till 5 a.m. He is the first president in some 15 years to attend the parades in Rio.

It must have sounded like a great idea when it was first floated. Last year, Zero Point Zero Production, the company that creates the Travel Channel's popular TV show, No Reservations, starring celeb chef Anthony Bourdain, approached mobile content company Mobicious to form connections with its viewers by posting behind-the-scenes, candid shots from the show on its mobile photo sharing site SnapMyLife. The crew has since posted some 340 photos to the site's free, ad-supported public albums.

But according to Xconomy.com, which took an in-depth look at how the venture was faring, the albums are curiously "unsocial." The crew of the show can post photos, but users can't post their own photos to the stream. And, while users can comment on photos, the crew doesn't typically respond to them?out of 340 photos, there were only four comments from the crew. The pictures themselves apparently still look like "studio-produced publicity shots." It seems that the explanation comes down to legal issues. The show can't post a pic on the photo-sharing site unless they have legal sign off from all the people in it, and as such is "extensively vetted by both Zero Point Zero and the Travel Channel." So much for spontaneity and the mobile advantage.

Orchid Shows Brighten up Winter's last Gray Days

NEW YORK – Enough already with chilly gray winter. Time to pick up a bouquet of bright pink tulips and start thinking about spring.

In many places, it will be weeks before daffodils and hyacinths start peeking through the ground, but there are plenty of flower shows to see in the meantime. Some are big annual events with themes that change every year, like the famous Philadelphia Flower Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, this year March 1-8 with a "Bella Italia" theme, http://www.theflowershow.com (tickets, $22).

Other displays focus on one type of flower, like the various orchid shows that showcase the jungle plant's intense blooms at gardens and exhibit halls around the country.

One of those annual orchid shows held each year just as the cold weather starts to lift is at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx.

"We're in the last gray days of winter," said Marc Hachadourian, curator of NYBG's Glasshouse Collection. "What better place to be than a tropical paradise filled with exotic orchids?"

ORCHIDS: The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx hosts its seventh annual orchid show, this year showcasing the plants in a contemporary Brazilian garden design with fountains, pools, mosaics and palms. The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and has been hosting orchid shows for an impressive 91 of those years. Royal Caribbean has added two Nickelodeon Family Cruises to its 2009 summer slate, following the sellout of last year's debut. This year cruisegoers will have their pick of coasts. Mariner of the Seas sails July 26 out of Los Angeles for the Western Mexican Rivera, and Freedom of the Seas heads to the Eastern Caribbean on Aug. 9 from Port Canaveral, Fla. Sea and cycle in Alaska. Sin City worries its image hurts business travel

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sin City is worried that its well-honed style is crimping its business.

Born of carefully crafted slogans — "What happens here stays here" — and smiling, sequined showgirls, the image of a 24-hour adult Disneyland with free-flowing booze and casino chips is making the tourist destination seem radioactive to companies keen on not appearing frivolous as they seek government bailouts.

In the past two weeks, at least four major companies canceled meetings worth hundreds of thousands of dollars — not because of costs but because of appearances. Even President Barack Obama questioned the propriety of flying off to Las Vegas if taxpayers were helping foot the bill.

Tourism officials, already nervous after watching meeting and convention attendance decline 5 percent in 2008, are challenging the impression that business meetings are wasteful — especially those conducted under the neon lights of Las Vegas.

"It's necessary, for us to thrive in this community, that folks come here and realize that this is not some stepchild," Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said. "This is a very important place for people to conduct very important business."

Goodman — who often appears at functions with a showgirl at each arm — sent a letter this week to Obama objecting to his remarks.

"You can't get corporate jets, you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime," Obama said during a town hall meeting in Indiana.

Obama's comment came after Wells Fargo & Co. canceled a conference at two high-end Las Vegas hotels in response to a barrage of criticism from Capitol Hill after The Associated Press reported on the company's previous luxury-laden trips for its top employees.

The company, which received a $25 billion bailout, cried foul in a full-page New York Times ad and said media reports about bailed-out companies have been "deliberately misleading." The bank said it would cancel all its recognition events this year.

Wells Fargo is not alone. Since the fall, companies that have taken $277 billion in federal assistance through the Troubled Asset Relief Program have faced increased scrutiny for travel practices by lawmakers and an angry public.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. moved a three-day conference from the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino to San Francisco, incurring a $600,000 cancellation penalty to skip town. U.S. Bancorp, which received $6.6 billion, dropped plans to reward top managers with a trip to Naples, Fla. Morgan Stanley, which has received $10 billion in bailout funds, canceled a trip for top employees to Monte Carlo.

Roger Dow, president of the Travel Industry Association, called the growing attention "paralyzing" for corporate meetings and events, which represent 15 percent of all travel spending nationwide.

"We have to stop this from being epidemic," said Dow.

Dow said Wells Fargo should not have canceled.

"Personally, I wish that ad had said, 'It was a perfect business expense to get the money back to the American taxpayer faster, and this is one of the tools that we use and we will defend them and show anybody that is curious why they are effective and why they have a great bottom-line result for this organization,'" Dow said.

Michael Massari, vice president of meeting sales and operations for Harrah's Entertainment, Inc., in Las Vegas, said some companies shouldn't have planned trips in the first place.

"If there are meetings that you're having that are lavish and are boondoggles or that are no longer productive because of the expense, that have diminishing returns, then good companies should stop doing those things," he said.

Massari, however, said the vast majority of meetings — in Las Vegas and elsewhere — are well thought-out.

Those who promote Las Vegas, the nation's top business travel destination, are quick to list reasons why it's a good place to book meetings. Easy airline access. 140,000 hotel rooms. Low rates. Plentiful convention facilities. A wide range of dining and entertainment options.

Las Vegas hosted more than 22,000 meetings, conventions and trade shows last year, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which markets the city to leisure and business travelers.

For years that promotion has unabashedly included gambling and nightlife. On the convention authority's Web site, a section for meeting planners features photographs of showgirls, the Las Vegas Strip and a roulette wheel.

"The two are not at odds with one another," said Mayor Goodman, who also chairs the convention authority.

Robert Goldstein, senior vice president of Las Vegas Sands Corp., said he is annoyed by the idea that a company can't do business at a fun destination.

"We're not going to pretend all this stuff doesn't exist," Goldstein said. "Last time I checked, alcohol was prevalent in a lot of major cities, and you can go anyplace in the country if you want to see girls."

Goldstein said Sands would likely not change its marketing strategy despite three recent cancellations that would have each brought hundreds of guests to its Venetian and Palazzo hotel-casinos.

Some tourism officials don't think Las Vegas should cling to its reputation as a party town if it wants to attract image-conscious companies.

"In light of the recession, in light of everything, we absolutely have to change," said Karen Gordon, president of Activity Planners International, a Las Vegas-based company that assists corporate meeting planners and recently laid off half of its eight-person staff.

Jan Jones, senior vice president of communications and government relations for Harrah's and a former mayor of Las Vegas, said the public is focusing more today on how businesses make decisions, and because of that, Las Vegas itself will likely see a change.

"All of our marketing is having to change somewhat, because the consumer is changing," Jones said. "In 2009, you spell Vegas V-A-L-U-E."
